Lithuania, officially the Republic of Lithuania, is a country in Northern Europe. One of the three Baltic states, it is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea. Lithuania has an estimated population of 2.9 million people, and its capital and largest city is Vilnius. In 1940 the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania and it lived under the totalitarian regime for 50 years. On 11 March 1990, a year before the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union, Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare itself independent, resulting in the restoration of an independent State of Lithuania.
Birštonas is a balneological resort and a spa town in Lithuania situated on the right bank of the Nemunas River. Birštonas received its city rights in 1529, and was appointed a city in 1966. The city is the administrative centre of the Birštonas municipality.
Birštonas gimnazija currently has 550 students and 52 teachers. The school provides primary, lower secondary and secondary education. According to the national results of state exams in 2016 and participation in contests and olympiads, Birštonas gimnazija has been ranked an honourable sixty second place among over 400 gymnasium schools in Lithuania. Besides quality education, the students are encouraged to develop their interests, abilities in a big variety of extra – curricular activities, such as, sports, arts, music, dancing, theatre, ICT. Participating in European projects helps students to gain better understanding of European history, culture, development of European perspective.
